Sažetak
Image analysis was used to characterize quantitatively the crystal shapes of exstra pure PCC particles produced in laboratory. The results show that the method can be usefully applied in the PCC precipitation system. It gives the quantitative description of morphology and enables us to get a better insight into the relationship of the mineralogical composition and particle size/morphology to operating conditions. Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been given a good deal of attention by industry as a specialty product. Its final application is determined by its purity, particle size and distribution, crystal structure and morphology. These are in turn determined by the quality of the internal row material, the method of its production, and the process parameters. Monitoring of crystal population kinetics is usually made by laser diffraction, but size distribution are obtained in volume and are not easy to interpret due to difficulties in the calculation of correct shape factors. It was therefore decided to use image analysis to characterize quantitatively the sapes of particles obtained by "ethanolamine process". The effect of different parameters (temperature, CO_2 concentration) on the crystal structure and morphology has been examined.
