Binomial expressions have thus far been on the agenda of many scholars interested in legal language (Mellinkoff 1963 ; Danet 1980 ; Gustafsson 1984 ; Bhatia 1993 ; Carvalho 2007 ; Bukovčan 2009). Usually, however, they have been treated in isolation, i.e., not taking into account the wider context, which can reveal many interesting findings about their “distinctive meaning” (Sinclair 2004: 30). This chapter will, therefore, investigate the wider context of binomial expressions in the English- language corpus of contracts and report on the usefulness thereof. It will reveal units that typically extend binomial expressions as well as suggest ways of approaching their interpretation.
