Sažetak
Tree crown defoliation and occurrence of biotic and abiotic damage are important indicators of forest health. As such, they are considered within the Criterion 2, “Forest health and vitality”, one of the six criteria adopted by Forest Europe (formerly the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe – MCPFE) to provide information for sustainable forest management in Europe1. Defoliation surveys are conducted in combination with detailed assessments of biotic and abiotic damage causes. Unlike assessments of tree damage, which can in some instances trace the tree damage to a single cause, defoliation is an unspecific parameter of tree vitality, which can be affected by a number of anthropogenic and natural factors. Combining the assessment of damage symptoms and their causes with observations of defoliation allows for a better insight into the condition of trees, and the interpretation of the state of European forests and its trends in time and space is made easier. This chapter presents results from the crown condition assessments on the large-scale, representative, transnational monitoring network (Level I) of ICP Forests carried out in 2017, as well as long-term trends for the main species and species groups.
