Sažetak
Croatian is a heritage language for a great number of speakers whose primary language is English (in Australia, Canada, USA and UK). In this paper we present the results of a research conducted on a corpus of spoken language of second generation speakers of Croatian. Our socioliguistic research reveals that the majority of these speakers use Croatian as a heritage language primarily (or exclusively) for communication within the family circle. We focus on the differences in agreement that exist between Croatian and English. English is the language in which these speakers are educated, and it is their primary language in communication with others. As a result, it influences the linguistic choices they make when speaking Croatian. Agreement is a challenging syntactic relation for all speakers of Croatian who do not use it in their everyday communication and who do not use it for different purposes (different functional styles) and to talk about all possible topics. Agreement errors are caused by the lack of automaticity when it comes to using cases, and as a result, agreement should not only be viewed from the perspective of syntax, but also from the perspective of morphosyntax.
