Sažetak
Coumarins are wide spread chemical compounds that belong to a group of compounds known as benzopyrones. They are well known in the plant kingdom and more than 3400 naturally occurring coumarins have been identified. Coumarins can be extracted from the plants and synthesized in laboratory as well. Nowadays, various coumarin derivatives are increasingly synthesized due to their positive effects to the human health (antimicrobial, antiviral, antiinflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibitory activity). An important factor in the chemical synthesis is the use of green solvents that are not harmful to the environment. For this purpose, the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is even more desirable since DESs are easily synthesized from biodegradable and environmentally benign components. Coumarins can be synthesized trough many reactions (Pechmann condensation reaction, Witting, Claisen, Reformatsky and Kontanecki- Robinson reaction), but the most common reaction for their synthesis is Knoevenagel condensation. The aim of this work was to synthesize coumarin derivatives utilizing green solvents in order to decrease usage of harmful and toxic organic solvents in the synthesis. Knoevengael condensation of salicylaldehide and dimethylmalonate into coumarin was performed in 20 different DESs as a reaction media in order to find the best DES, which was proven to be choline chloride:urea (ChCl:U 1:2). Furthermore, a series of coumarin derivatives was synthesized from substituted salicylaldehydes and dimethylmalonate in choline chloride:urea DES.
