Sažetak
The main goal of this paper is to present the importance of pronunciation for successful communication and to emphasize the importance of teaching it in EFL classes. Features of pronunciation that language teachers could deal with are vast and not all can fit into the scope of this final paper but ones that have the most influence on the intelligibility are presented here. After introducing brief historical overview of teaching pronunciation, the focus of the paper shifts onto more practical aspects of the pronunciation teaching. Firstly, intelligibility, which should be the goal of teaching pronunciation, is explained. Then the relationship between spelling and pronunciation is dealt with and how it can be used for explaining English pronunciation. Furthermore, the views on whether to focus more on segmental or suprasegmental features are expressed and it is explained how they are actually interconnected. Finally, this is concluded by emphasizing the important role of the teacher in providing the students with necessary information to successfully master pronunciation.
