Sažetak
Yeast cell is surrounded with a thick polysaccharide cell wall. This structure is often described as an essential extracellular organelle which provides required mechanical stability of the cell, but is also involved in a number of processes by which the cell communicates with its surronding. The outstanding features of this moiety enable it to withstand turgor pressures larger than 15 bars, and still maintain significant flexibility necessary for the cell growth and budding. Surprisingly, in contrast to bacterial cell walls, the structure of the yeast wall has not yet been well understood. Although a significant amount of data has been collected about biochemical mechanisms concerninig the synthesis of individual components of the cell wall, little is known about ways how these components are interconnected into a rigid network. The paper sumarises our present knowledge on S. cerevisiae cell wall proteins.
