Sažetak
The starting point for this text is living in the culture of images and their mass production, as well as the dominance of a sensory perception that is mediated by ideas defined by the identity, habits, and customs of the contemporary human. Computer animation, digital images and sound, hypermedia, interactivity, and cyberspace introduce new ways of articulating an artistic idea, as well as a new aestheticism. Digital media gives a new meaning to montage and narration, the semantic construction of an image. In that field Zagreb once had a leading role, by organising New Tendencies, a series of international exhibitions and symposia from 1961 until 1973 ; the most important international artistic event of the 1960s, being at the source of computer-based art. So Zagreb in the era of late modernism became a point of initiation for new media art and theory. Contemporary artists in their work often exploit modern and modernism, that was called "modernology" by Sabine Breitwieser, using methods of pastiche, quotation and appropriation, or opposing the postulates of modernism. The Zagreb school of architecture and architectural and urban heritage in the 1930s as well as the high modernism in Zagreb are a highly valorized heritage and a way of branding the city. In my research of works and projects of contemporary art concerning the architectural and urban heritage of modernism in Zagreb and Croatia, I am trying to identify the key controversies about its symbolic and symbolizing values and continuity in today's conception of the city. The act of transposing artworks contributes to the understanding of the places from which they arise. Art is not a mirror, but a way of defining identity, which today is not based on belonging to the nation or cultural circle.
