Sažetak
On the example of the Civil Code, Opchinska naredba od zlocsinstvah i njihovih pedepsah, printed in Budim in 1788, actually the translation of the Criminal Code of Josip II under the title Allgemeines Gesetz über Verbrechen und Derselben Bestrafung, it is possible to outline the ways in which the Age of Enlightenment influenced the different life areas of all people of the empire, as well as the law and the punishment of felonies, and in particular the historical development of the Croatian legal terminology created by the Austrian sample. In addition to the content analysis of the law, the paper focuses on lexical descriptiveness and linguistic flexibility of Croatian language. There are studies about the Croatian legal terminology, but rarely about the historical ones. The non-literary literature of the 18th century, to the past ten years, is not sufficiently detailed and deeply linguistically studied, so is the part of this historical corpus almost unknown to the public. The middle of the 19th century is taken for the standardization of legal terminology. This paper is a proof that old historical laws and translations preserve the immense lexical richness of the Croatian language and record the historical development of many national languages, which made their language potential under the influence of the advanced reforms of Habsburg Empire at that time.
