Sažetak
The end of the Second World War in former Yugoslavia resulted in large-scale executions of civilians and war collaborators. As a result, many mass graves from that period are still undiscovered. In accordance to international humanitarian law, Geneva convention, Resolution 1481 (2006): Need for international condemnation of crimes of totalitarian communist regimes as well as according to Republic of Croatia point of view that all military and civilian persons who have lost their lives in World War II and in the post-war period have the right to a worthy eternal resting place, the Republic of Croatia passed the law about research, arranging and maintaining military cemeteries, cemeteries of the Second World War ad post war period victims. Consequently, Croatian Ministry of veterans started developing Croatian model of searching for missing persons in order to locate these victims, as well as victims from the Homeland war (1991-1995). This paper aims to present methodological approach to discovering mass graves by the application of Croatian model of searching for missing persons. The focus in this presentation will be on the segment of the model which refers to locating mass grave sites in the field. The multi-method research strategy of the Croatian model of searching for missing persons is its the main strength and the reason for high percentage of discoveries. Our mass graves research strategy which include human resources, geophysical research techniques, remote sensing and cadaver dogs will be presented through the real cases.
