Sažetak
In the spirit of sustainable development there has been an increased exploitation of organic residues from various sectors of agriculture and food industries over the past few decades. Different crop residues are utilised as raw material in bioprocesses since they are excellent substratum for the growth of microorganisms. Their application in fermentation processes has already resulted with production of bulk-chemicals and valuable products such as amino acids, enzymes, organic acids, single-cell proteins, biologically active secondary metabolites, etc. Such utilization of crop residues has many advantages, with environmental and value-added aspects’ being the most important ones. Residues from the production of edible oils have the large potential in different biotechnological applications. Oil cakes/oil meals are by-products that remain after oil extraction from seeds and are mainly used as feed source and fertilizers. According to the World Food and Agriculture Organization (www.fao.org) report from 2014, oilseed production is steadily growing and reaches an annual output of almost 130 million tonnes. After China, the EU is the second largest importer of oilseed cake, what confirms economic importance of this industrial nus- product as raw material. Edible oil cakes have high nutritional value, especially due to high protein content ranging from 15% to 50%. Preparation of protein hydrolysates from oil cakes is one of their possible applications, particularly interesting in the biotechnological field. Protein hydrolysates could be used in the treatment of protein malnutrition or as protein supplements. Also, protein hydrolysates obtained from soy, rice and wheat gluten have already been on the market and are used to increase the efficiency of the microbial and cell cultures processes. Currently, the oil cakes from crops such as flax and hemp are exploited less than 10%. Flaxseed and hempseed meal contain various components and significant portion of proteins which are interesting to be used in animal cell technology as a replacement for serum of animal origin. Therefore, the main goal of our work on “HYDRO PEP CELL” project (HRZZ Grant No. 38489) is the application of protein hydrolysates obtained from flaxseed and hempseed in cell culture media. Our preliminary results support that thesis and indicates possible usage of the hydrolysates as beneficial component of cell culture media.
