Sažetak
Communication is not just the transfer of a message from the sender to the recipient, it surrounds us, transcending to a more complicated level, since we communicate even when we are not communicating, be it verbally, or by using gestures, silence or clothes. For verbal communication language is the most important means of communication which transfers ideas, thoughts, attitudes and messages in real time. The importance of intercultural communication in contemporary globalised society is reflected in the fact that it requires not only a knowledge of different cultures, but also of English as a lingua franca, having as an imperative interaction of people from different cultures who speak different languages. The aim of the paper is to accentuate the importance of intercultural communication in the context of tourism and hospitality industry where it plays a crucial role in attracting tourists and presenting the tourism offer. Inadequate knowledge and inaccurate use of English in communication, especially when translating names of local dishes or tourist attractions, are the most common pitfalls which can make the process of communication ineffective. In the paper, some examples of bad practice in the context of intercultural communication are presented, alongside the advice on how to avoid such misunderstandings.
