Sažetak
Heterocyclic chromophores are one of the most investigated classes of optical sensing molecules due to their excellent spectral properties and their ability to detect diverse analytes. Amongst them, the benzimidazole unit often captures the attention of scientists as it can serve as a multifunctional unit in heteroaromatic molecular systems for optoelectronics and non-linear optics (NLO), photovoltaics, and in sensing and bioimaging. Its many structure-related properties such as similarity to naturally occurring nucleotides, electron accepting ability, π-bridging, chromogenic pH sensitivity/switching and metal- ion chelating properties, make benzimidazole an exceptional structural candidate for development of multifunctional molecular devices.
