Sažetak
The great medieval County of Križevci was a territorial unit that covered the area of today’s central Croatia. It exhibits manifestations of architectural developmental processes spanning from the 13th to the 16th century. Because of its smaller scale, these processes – which occurred simultaneously throughout the central European area – are delineated more clearly with the Regnum Sclavoniae as their participant. During this period, the cannons of spatial organization, religious architecture and fortifications on two levels, where formed and changed. This is mainly true for comissions by the centralized Church, the feudal government, and investments by the local community. From this perspective, it is possible to view the entire development of medieval architecture from the 13th to the 16th century throughout continental Croatia. This study will review the results of previous research on medieval architecture and topography, as well as the applied methodology, in which there is a noticeable asymmetry between studies of written sources and archaeological xcavations. The great narrative on the development of medieval architecture in continental Croatia has, from the 19th century onwards, been perturbed by the same conundrum – the dating of lower levels. Namely, most verified cases of medieval architecture – fortifications and churches – are still missing certain dating, specifically of lower levels. The proposed study will, through several examples of religious architecture and fortifications, show the determined signifiers of the processes of architectural development from the 13th to the 16th century in the mentioned area.
