Sažetak
Both the history of Prague Castle and the history of its research, reaching back to the 19th century, are extraordinarily rich. The beginnings of Prague Castle, synonymous with the beginning of Czech history, became one of the most debated and sensitive subjects. It has always been perceived in the geographical limits of the present-day castle and seen as the seat of Czech dukes on the one hand and of church institutions on the other. The thorough and long-term revision of the archaeological research forces us to reconsider this basic view. The oldest residential remnants rather avoid the area of the present-day castle which can rather be associated with cult areas. It was occupied only gradually, starting in the west, by church institutions, perhaps by an archpresbytery at the end of the 9th century and a bishopric and convent in the 970s. The first worldly palace, however, appeared only in the 11th century.
