Sažetak
Objective Obesity is chronic endocrine- metabolic disease, which causes many complications. Leads to increased risk of developing comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, stroke, certain types of cancer, infertility and other conditions. In 2014 Eurostat published that Croatia has 67.5% overweight men and 48.3% women. According to Croatian Institute for Public Health obesity is rising. Methods Based on long experience, Division of Endocrinology, University Hospital Centre Zagreb in 2016 has started along with individual treatment, group treatment of obesity. Hereby endocrinologist/diabetologist team consists from nurse, psychiatrist, specialist in physical medicine and dietitians. Program includes coherent groups of motivated obese patients with common characteristics, developed comorbidities. Along with education, everyday physical activity, specially designed diet and informal approach, there is also mutual support of patients. As confirmed through studies, Mediterranean diet is proven to be one of the best models for lifestyle change that includes healthy losing weight and achieving regular dietary habits. During 5 day stay in daily hospital patients are on specially adjusted Mediterranean-reduction diet. Results After one year 13 groups, 104 patients participated in the program. The average body weight loss in the first group one year after start was 6.3% of the body mass, and the fall in fat content measured by bioimpedance was 13.7%. The mean initial value of body mass index (BMI) of all groups was 41.9 kg/m2 (30- 68), mean last value was 40.6 kg/m2 (29-68). T- test showed statistically significant difference in body weight at the beginning of the program and after one year as well as in value of the BMI at the beginning and at the end of the program (p <0.001). To today in 2 years 134 patients lost 704.6 kg. Conclusions Mediterranean-reduction diet, multidisciplinary approach and interpersonal interaction can give results in treating obesity.
