Sažetak
The portal, today placed on the southern wall of the cathedral in Pula, bears a very interesting decoration. On the lintel, the central effigy of the Father is flanked by the coats of arms belonging to the bishop of Pula Buffareli and to the abbot Georgius (probably Georgius de Capitani from the Benedictine abbey in Vrh, Pula), and the Annunciation in the angles. The inscription on the lintel says that abbot Georgius had the relief carved in 1456. On the left jamb putti – amori are picking grapes. The figure of a putto holding his head suggests that it is a Dionysian scene. On the right jamb among dressed putti - angels musicians, abbot Gregorius is represented. Although the artistic expression of the relief is primitive, some of its characteristics are to be connected with works of Donatello and his workshop from author’s Paduan times (1443-1453. Perceived as an ensemble, the iconographic repertoire of the portal may be interpreted as an illustration of Christian history: the pre-Christian world drowned in alcohol on the left, opposed to the Heaven scented with angelic music on the right. The appearance of the Saviour on Earth is a dividing point between the two worlds (Annunciation) since his sacrifice enabled salvation and eternity. It is a traditional medieval representation of Christian history (Old and New Testament), which in this case used motives from antiquity, one of the main characteristics of Renaissance art.
