Sažetak
Marija Jurić Zagorka (1873–1957) is a well- known Croatian writer and journalist who has become a part of national cultural memory through her work and life, always fighting against social injustice and discrimination and for women's rights. She is also known as the first woman in Croatian journalism at a time when women were not allowed to write for newspapers. She spent the last two decades of her life in her apartment at Dolac 8 in downtown Zagreb and left behind rich cultural and literary heritage. In the same apartment in 2009, the Marija Jurić Zagorka's Memorial Collection was opened for public. The City Administration handed over the management over the collection to the Centre for Women's Studies, a civic association founded in 1995 with the aim of providing education in the area of women's studies, raising women's awareness and encouraging research and publishing related to women and feminist topics. A library with over 3500 books and magazines was established in the Centre from the field of women, gender studies and feminist theory. Since its inception, the Centre has implemented a one- year education program in the area of feminism, gender theory and related areas in a unique combination of historical knowledge, theory and practice, with the aim of developing critical thinking of gender issues. The aim of this paper is to make an extensive case study that would show how the former private space of the apartment of Marija Jurić Zagorka was transformed into a public space of learning, creation and sharing of knowledge. The research would include a historical (place history), theoretical (place as a powerful bearer of cultural capital and aura of knowledge) and a practical (place of co- existence of the Centre for Women's Studies and the Memorial Collection of Marija Jurić Zagorka) aspect of the space and attempt to show how a place of personal suffering of an elderly person became a place of freedom and creation under unfavorable social circumstances.
