Sažetak
Satellite towns, created in the process of suburbanization, represent significant development potential of wider spatial context. Within the network of its urban regions, although formally and legally independent, they are functionally firmly connected to the main city. Their good traffic connections favour the use of the central functions of the main city, and because of their proximity, over the years they have often functioned as main city's "dormitory". Knowledge of theory of sustainability and sustainable development as well as development dynamics over the past few decades have been stimulating architectural and urban planning professionals to change their consideration of values and long-term needs of large cities users, and to articulate new development concepts of urban agglomeration components based on sustainability principles. Satellite towns, as components of urban agglomeration, are potentially an ideal place for new forms of activity in space and places that can become representative examples of "a new lifestyle" based on technological innovations, environmental protection and social changes, while adapting to future challenges. As part of the education of architects and urban planners at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, new development scenarios for the components of urban agglomerations are considered within urban planning studios. Students are encouraged to think strategically and to comprehensively consider the long-term development of that specific city agglomeration's component. The aim of this article is to point out the need for systematic consideration of satellite towns within the network of urban regions in order to design the model for "city of the future" and to show potential development scenarios that give components a recognizable identity.
