Sažetak
Aquatic organisms bioaccumulate emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals (PhACs) and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). Kinetics of bioaccumulation and depuration of such pollutants were hitherto studied in laboratory experiments using high concentrations and short exposure. In situ these processes remain largely unexplored. To this end, we conducted a translocation exposure experiment using passive filter feeding caddisfly larvae (Hydropsyche sp., Hydropsychidae, Trichoptera) in an effluent-influenced river on the Iberian Peninsula. The experiment was carried out at two sites, upstream and downstream of the wastewater treatment plant. The translocated animals were collected at two-week intervals and maximum exposure length was 46 days. Both, PhACs and EDCs were detected in water (62 and 7 compounds, respectively), whereas in Hydropsyche tissues only accumulation of EDCs was observed (5 compounds in total). Overall, variability in bioaccumulation and depuration dynamics of these compounds was recorded at spatial (across-site) and temporal (across-collection) levels.
