Sažetak
Oscar Nemon (1906 – 1985) portrayed kings and statesmen, artists and thinkers, celebrities belonging to the world of high politics. He portrayed from life some of the most influential and the most prominent persons of the 20th century – Sigmund Freud, Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, Dwight Eisenhower. As one of a few European sculptors of his time, Oscar Nemon originated – by creating exquisite portrait sculptures and monuments of political, military, aristocratic, cultural and intellectual elite – a pantheon of the key figures of influence and power of an era. Today, twenty of Nemon’s portrait busts and statues are erected or on display in various institutions and public spaces in London with more in Oxford. Several portraits by Nemon are placed within or next to the United Kingdom’s most important Government institutions such as Houses of Parliament or Ministry of Defence. Probably the best known is the Statue of Winston Churchill in the Members Lobby, House of Commons. By analysing those portraits, this paper will deal with their symbolical and iconological role, their metaphorical dimensions.
