Sažetak
The purpose of this master thesis is to examine the relationship between personality traits and conflict management styles and to show the importance of understanding different personalities in order to have the most successful conflict resolution. The success of conflict resolution depends on many factors connected with personality traits of each person, because each personality trait influences the choice of management approaches in determining type and resolution of each conflict situation. It is widely known that personality traits influence the occurrence of conflicts and that managers have an important task to deal efficiently with every conflict situation. Once the differences in personalities are understood, the appropriate approach can be implemented for certain situation and resolve it in a fast and easiest way possible for both sides in a conflict. By accepting different personality traits, it is easier to develop and change management styles if necessary in order to get the desired outcome in every situation. Within this context, an empirical research was conducted using a Big Five Personality questionnaire as research instrument. Items related to individual’s personality that are examined with this test are extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to experience, which were subsequently put into relation to the choice of the best conflict resolution style. The latter construct was measured by items used in a Thomas-Kilmann conflict handling styles test which consist of thirty items that rate on how true they are about a person by using “A” and “B” statements that showed characteristics of person’s behavior. Both questionnaires were distributed within a convenient sample of different individuals, most of who were either employed with finished schooling or Master’s Degree students. The majority of respondents have high level of agreeableness and openness which is not surprising since the majority of respondents were young individuals that thrive to new knowledge and experiences. When entering conflict, avoiding and collaborating are two most favorable conflict handling style. For most individuals it is best to avoid conflict then to create unnecessary tensions or collaborate through conflict to resolve it with compromising solution to satisfy both sides. It could be easily concluded that the majority of respondents are trying their best to work through any kind of conflict or to find compromising solution so that their working environment stays undisturbedly.
