Sažetak
The late Holocene is the most intensively studied period in palaeo-sea-level research. This research increased during last two decades along the eastern Adriatic as well. Sea level curves are obtained by using various methods and are based on different markers which are often combined. Those are primarily archaeological coastal remains as well as geomorphological and sedimentological markers. However, most of the methods used till now do not provide enough precision. As the studying period is short the error bars are often too large. In order to provide more precision and better accuracy of sea-level curves the latest research along the eastern Adriatic has been centred on algal rims as sea-level markers. Fossil bio-constructions on rocky coast have proven to be precise sea-level indicators in microtidal environments. Algal rims formed by alga Lithophyllum byssoides (Lamarck) Foslie allow us to study the relative sea level change with much more consistency and accuracy. Under favourable conditions Lithophyllum byssoides build reef like bioconstructions just above the biological mean sea-level which can be 14C dated. Algal rims from different locations in the Northern Adriatic have been analysed. The obtained 14C ages of algal carbonate samples have been further corrected for the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect. The obtained relative sea-level curve starts in the 5th century when the relative sea level was -70±10 cm below the recent mean sea level what confirms our previous findings obtained combining geomorphological and archaeological markers. We have also established a close link between relative sea-level change and periods of rapid climate changes during the last 1.5 ka. This research was supported by the Croatian Science Foundation (project no. HRZZ-IP-2013- 11-1623, Reconstruction of the Quaternary environment in Croatia using isotope methods – REQUENCRIM).
