Sažetak
Since energy consumption represents 40-60% of oil refinery total operational costs, energy efficiency has been recognized as a highly-influential factor for refinery production profitability margins. Importance of rational energy use has also been recognized by EU directives and National action plans for energy efficiency of individual country members. The consequences of aforementioned action plans could materialize as additional costs for oil refineries, while the costs due to realized GHG emissions already exist. To this end, a system for waste heat recovery has been designed for Crude distillation unit (CDU) in Rijeka oil refinery, INA – Industrija nafte d.d. Zagreb. Results show that re-use of waste heat could be improved by implementation of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) aimed at additional production of mechanical and electrical power. This would be done by exploiting the potential of readily available low temperature heat which is currently wasted in cooling system, and not used in production process. Moreover, implementation of additional external energy sources would not be required. Thus, the implementation of proposed waste heat re-use system would significantly improve energy, environmental and economic performance of analyzed process unit, and its technical characteristics generally allow for a wider application in the process industry. The obtained results have shown acceptable economical results, with payback time between 3 and 4 years, depending on the analyzed proposed waste heat re-use concept, existing refinery energy supply options and constraints, and possibilities for system integration within the existing process unit.
