Sažetak
Beta-blockers are one of the most commonly prescribed cardiovascular drugs. Due to their ability for blocking adrenergic receptors, they are used for treating patients suffering from hypertension and coronary artery diseases such as myocardial infarction. These compounds are chiral and it has been shown that bioactivity of enantiomers of beta blockers can differ, meaning one enantiomer can be active, while the other can be inactive or even have harmful effect. Since beta-blockers are frequently used, it is expected that high levels of these drugs can be found in wastewaters due to excretion. It was found that degradation of beta-blockers in wastewater treatment plants is not complete, so there is possibility of occurrence in surface waters where they can have negative effect on aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is important to develop analytical method for determination of enantiomers of beta-blockers in water. High performance liquid chromatography method for determination of enantiomers of acebutolol, alprenolol, atenolol, labetalol, metoprolol, pindolol and propranolol was developed. Complete enantioseparation of all analytes was achieved. Acebutolol, atenolol, labetalol and metoprolol, beta-blockers used in Croatia and Czech Republic, were completely separated on Chirobiotic V column using mobile phase consisting of methanol, acetic acid and triethylamine. Method proved to have good linearity with low limits of quantification for enantiomers of all four of beta-blockers. It can be concluded that this method can be used for determination of beta-blockers used in Croatia and Czech Republic in combination with some method of sample preparation, for example solid phase extraction.
