Sažetak
Taking into consideration the current level of automation technology on board modern vessels followed by continuous trend of reducing the number of the crew, it is evident that autonomous ships are a matter of “when“ rather than “if“. Despite the fact that numerous projects of unmanned vessels and autonomous vessels are in different stages of development, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed before wide commercial implementation of autonomous vessels. The authors firmly believe that required technologies are already available and even cost competitive. Moreover, it is in line with MUNIN project findings. That is, the autonomous vessels can contribute to the aim of a more sustainable maritime transport industry. Furthermore, the autonomous ship bears the potential to reduce operational expenses, environmental impact and nevertheless attract seagoing professionals. However, legal challenges and legal regulatory requirements are largely unprepared for this rapid development and new “milestone“ in the shipping industry. As a part of regulatory requirements, one of the key questions is what competencies are required for the personnel working in the future Shore Control Centres as autonomous ship controllers.
