Sažetak
If Croatia is to join the European Union in some near future, the time it remains behind EU borders should be used to adjust its industrial structure. Such an effort would contribute to enhancing the chances of the Croatian industry to act as an equal partner in attracting jobs, especially those in manufacturing and assembly, for the Common European Market. As a result of the structural patterns of business organization that evolved under the former regime, Croatian industry has been led to pursue high degrees of vertical integration and diversification which we now see as an impediment for achieving higher levels of efficiency and flexibility. One of the factors affecting the much needed industrial restructuring in Croatia can definitely be related to the creation and/or subsistence of a well developed and reliable subcontracting sector. In the absence of adequate statistical data, we attempt to reach some conclusions on the rationales, extents and patterns of economic restructuring already undergone in Croatia via deductive reasoning, by referring it to selected international experiences of industrial development and trans-border economic integration.
