Sažetak
The aim of this sociolinguistic research was to determine the status of the student population, i.e. their profiles, according to sex, age, economic status, place of birth, the regionality index (RI), nationality, mother tongue, language prestige, relations between jargon (slang), dialect and standard language, attractiveness of speaking the dialects and vernaculars and preserving them as a symbol of a personal identity. The paper focuses on the perception of the student population of the dialects and vernaculars in relation to the standard language with respect to their native language/-s and place of birth. The study included 300 respondents, the method used in the collecting of data on linguistic diversity was based on the survey in which students respond to direct and indirect questions, and the data was processed by a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data. The research results confirmed the assumption that the student population in Istria is multilingual, regardless of whether they have lived the whole life in Istria or they are in Istria only temporary (to obtain education). This study showed that respondents usually speak multiple foreign languages and that they are aware that the preservation of dialects and vernaculars means that they preserve their own identity.
