Sažetak
In the 21st century abandoned and abused animals still represent a great animal welfare and social problem. Unfortunately, a large number of dogs with unknown owners have been neglected before abandoning. These dogs are usually taken care of by animal protection associations, treated and adopted. Association "Noina Arka” is leading an official Emergency Rescue Program for the care of traumatized animals without owners, developed in coordination with the City of Zagreb. The aim of our study was to investigate the incidence, health status and treatment outcome of neglected dogs in the Emergency Rescue Program (ERP). During the period of 7 years, 541 injured dogs were admitted to “Noina Arka” ERP. Among them, 87 (15%) dogs had some medical evidence of neglect or a witness report of poor living conditions before admittance. In total 57% of neglected dogs were in a middle age category (12-84 months), 53% of them were males and 47% females. The largest number of injuries were found in thoracic and abdominal region (57%). The most common clinical findings on neglected dogs were poor body condition and ectoparasitosis, while treated injuries included different type of wounds (24%), gunshot injuries (12%), different type of neoplasia (8%) and pulmonary contusions (8%). Results showed that 56 dogs (64%) treated in the program were cured, 7 (8%) had some type of physical handicap and 24 (28%) dogs died during treatment or were euthanized. Average length of time spent in the shelter for neglected dogs was relatively short (3.66 months), but, on the other hand, only 42 (48%) dogs were adopted in the 2-year period. The explanation for this might be their average age of 3.6 years. These dogs have special needs, first of all, adequate and quick adoption preferably with an experienced owner. Our results emphasize that general public’s awareness about rescuing and adoption of these dogs should be raised on several levels. In this process, veterinary experts should have an important role.
