Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to compare the development of winter sports tourism in Croatia and Romania. For that purpose, various secondary data regarding tourism and winter sports tourism in two countries was collected and then compared. Although much larger in surface and bigger in the number of inhabitants, Romania seems to have less developed tourism than Croatia when it comes to data on generated arrivals and overnight stays. However, when taking in consideration the geographic characteristics of countries seems that winter (sports) tourism is better developed in Romania. Romania generates a majority of its tourism flows from domestic tourists, as Croatia’s tourism is based on international tourist arrivals. This is the case for tourism in mountain areas as well. However, the highest number of domestic overnight stays in mountain parts of Croatia is generated in January. If this is because of the winter sports tourism offer, Croatia should pay much more attention to this group of tourists when developing winter sports tourism.Although both countries want to develop winter sports tourism, the modernization and diversification of tourism infrastructure and ski facilities in Croatian and Romanian winter resorts is needed. In order to keep with global trends requires a complex policy and important government programs which will influence positively the evolution of tourism activity in the two countries are necessary.
