Sažetak
The aim of this study was to evaluate the waste wood biomass as low-cost adsorbent for adsorptive removal of synthetic dye methlene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents, poplar (deciduous hardwood) and fir (coniferous softwood) sawdusts were characterized in terms of elemental comsposition (C, H, O and N), chemical composition and FTIR. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of contact time, initial MB concentration (10, 30, 50 and 100 mg L-1), pH (5-9) and adsorbent concentration (1 – 10 g L-1) on dye removal at 25 °C. The adsorption process reached equilibrium within two hours of contact time. High removal of MB (over 90% for all runs) with experimentally obtained adsorption capacities ranging from 21.9 to 22.7 mg g-1 was achieved. The experimental adsorption data were tested by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. The kinetic experimental data were analysed using pseudo-first, pseudo-second and intaparticle diffusion models. The results demonstrated that both poplar and fir sawdusts are effective as low-cost adsorbents for MB removal from aqueous solutions and could potentially be used in the treatment of coloured wastewaters.
