Sažetak
Croatia is one of the rare European countries with all three large carnivores – brown bear (Ursus arctos), grey wolf (Canis lupus) and Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx). Also, golden jackal is present and is an important factor, although traditionally the species is not considered as a large carnivore. Historically there were always conflicts between humans and large carnivores and especially today it is a great challenge to efficiently manage these populations in coexistence with humans. Each species brings its own challenges and problems. Croatian brown bear population is estimated at 1000 animals, estimation is based on DNA identification of individuals from scat samples. Bear is a protected species on European level, but in Croatia about 130 animals are hunted each year due to increasing population size and to maintain low damages. Croatian brown bear management is a role model to many European countries and a positive example of a good cooperation of all interest groups. While the greatest problem in wolf management is dispute among the interest groups about population size estimation and wolf management cannot be properly implemented until opposite groups start cooperating. Lynx in Croatia brings another challenge. The population is heavily inbred and its survival is threatened due to low genetic diversity. A big international project is implemented trying to save the population trough reinforcement from Carpathian Mountains but all of this effort will be futile if all interest groups do not support it.
