Sažetak
The success of the PhD system depends on the mentors who must provide their time and expertise to support and improve candidates' research skills. The relationship between mentor and doctoral student is important for the success of a PhD project. Information about students’ perceptions of their relationship with mentor can be useful for improving the quality of the supervision. A total of 44 PhD students at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek filled an anonymous online Mentor-Doctoral Student Relationship Evaluation Questionnaire covering 13 relationship characteristics. In the first part students were asked to rate the importance of each characteristic, and in the second part they were asked to evaluate their own relationship through these 13 statements by indicating their level of agreement along the Likert scale. Almost half of the participants (45.5%) have been students of the postgraduate study for more than 3 years, and more than half of them (61.4%) are doing clinical doctoral theses. According to the responses, every aspect of the relationship is equally important, but the most important is encouraging the student for an individual work, and mentors' knowledge of the research process. Comparing to part-time students and postdoctoral researchers, significantly more full-time students strongly agreed with the claim that mentor provides enough information and resources for scientific research (Chi- Square, p<0.05), and gives useful feedback (Chi-Square, p<0.05). Although all participants emphasise the importance of mentors' active leading through PhD study and thesis writing, full-time students seem to be more satisfied with their relationship with mentor.
