Sažetak
The paper investigates recent research conclusions on agriculture output (mostly concerning wine-growing and cereal production) in the Kingdom of Croatia- Slavonia during 16th and 17th centuries, and compares the conclusions to main features of the “little divergence” debate. Sources, such as tithe records and tax registries show long-run trends in agricultural production and demand, as well as development and contraction of domestic markets and export. Slow, but relatively stable rise in agricultural output and population growth at the beginning of the 16th century were replaced by severe deterioration of local markets and severe economic problems at the start of next stage (1520–1590). However, during that time production of certain agricultural products was constantly growing. By the end of the 16th century Habsburg military reform was finally finished. It included a heighten presence of Inner Austrian estates in administering the defence system in the eastern border areas, which became the last wall of defence. In this constellation, Croatian magnates were becoming less powerful and incapable to use their assets more appropriately. Their most important goal was to uphold their tax exemptions, failing to understand that their privileges are significantly less important than a prominent position within a central state institution, which could be much more effectively utilised. Moreover, processes of militarization and territorialisation of the significant parts of the Kingdom of Croatia- Slavonia – the so-called Military border with the Ottoman Empire or Militärgrenze – had (negative) far reaching economic consequences throughout the 17th century. On the other hand, it seems that significant increase of agricultural production (especially production of wine) is closely connected to the steady increase of demand at the military border, and with the general military requirements during the campaigns. Constant Ottoman threat from the east, as well as the collapse of roads system in the Kingdom caused deterioration of local markets and severe disruption of communication on traditional trade routes. However, at the same time certain estates experienced significant increase of agricultural output. Certain towns and cities (especially on the coast of Adriatic) were able to significantly improve their trade export and crafts. During the first half of the 17th century, after a more effective defence system was finally in place, agricultural output slowed down, as well as other indicators such as production per head and population growth. Therefore, the paper will explore market conditions in different regions of Croatian-Slavonian Kingdom, as well as on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. There are several factors contributing to economic under-performance of Croatian and Slavonian regions ; for example: poorly developed institutions, re-emergence of serfdom, trade dependency, war-time economy etc. These questions will be dealt with through the use of quantitative data and comparative analysis. Special attention will be paid to market and political conditions, growth of urban settlements and serfdom in comparative perspective.
