Sažetak
The archaeological excavations in Istria have increased in recent years, and consequently the concepts and methodologies aim to provide new approaches to the image of post-Roman rural landscape in historiography. The analysis will focus on two questions: how did religious change shape rural landscape in Istria from the fifth to the seventh century, and which type of evidence are available for examining the history of the countryside? Consequently, the main research focus relies on the selected case studies in order to shed light on formation and institutionalization of Christian communities in the countryside. One of the main archaeological sources that will be taken into consideration are churches, which represent not only the basis for analyzing the Christianisation that intensively took place from the fifth century on, but also for understanding the main transformation of rural spaces in a wider context. The analysis should therefore concentrate on broad material evidence, such as church buildings constructed on the land properties which generally belonged to the Roman aristocracy, and in most of the cases were situated in close vicinity to the villas that probably ceased to function as residential and economic centres during the sixth century. From the end of the fifth century churches were built inside the fortified settlements at strategic points of territory and had the central role in the community because of their newly introduced institutional function. Another question is: how did church authorities or landowners influence on a spatial development? The investigation will question similarities and/or differences between other communities of the larger geographical area, and will bring a comparative approach across the period from the 5th to the 7th century.
