Sažetak
In this paper we present PALWaM, a small-scale linguistic atlas documenting dialect variation among eight Walser German communities in North-Western Italy and in neighbouring Ticino in Switzerland. The making of the atlas has represented an example of good practices in minority language policy because of the direct involvement of members of the local communities, intensively collaborating with a group of linguists. Such coordinated activities made it possible to acquire a fairly substantial amount of comparable data in a discontinuous and non- homogeneous linguistic minority in which extra-linguistic factors have had noteworthy effects on linguistic diversity. Lexical data extracted from this atlas are used here to test the explicatory value of a few extra-linguistic factors. Linguistic correspondences are coded into matrices in order to measure distances between pairs of linguistic varieties. As a result, a combination of geographical distribution and isolation will prove the factors that best account for linguistic variation in our corpus.
