Sažetak
Discourse analysis focuses on the forms and functions of language as well as the specific context of interaction. Within the field of second and foreign language acquisition, the classroom has become the target of many investigations. Classroom based research attempts to study the relationship between language instruction and classroom interaction on language learning. However, the dynamics of classroom interaction are complicated and different approaches have led to various methods each of which explores various levels or characteristics of communication and learning in the classroom. The aim of this paper was to analyse transcripts of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classroom lessons among first year university students to obtain a descriptive view of classroom interaction. The focus included aspects of teacher and student talk including frequency of turns and word count, the nature of classroom interaction based on pedagogical functions, teacher feedback and learner responses.
