Sažetak
Composting, in which the organic waste is biologically decomposed and stabilized under thermophilic conditions resulting from biologically produced heat, is considered as environmentally sound and economically viable alternative for the management of organic residues. Biowaste is defined as biodegradable garden and park waste, food and kitchen waste. It does not include forestry or agricultural residues, manure, sewage sludge, or other biodegradable waste such as natural textiles, paper or processed wood. Natural zeolite, clinoptilolite, can be added to composting substrate to enhance the quality of compost product. The aim of this work was to conduct composting process of biowaste without (P1) and with amendment of natural zeolite clinoptilolite (P2). Composting experiments were carried out with forced aeration in thermally insulated packed bed reactor (10 dm3 of working volume) during 21 days. During the process, temperature changes in the reactor were continuously monitored and evolved CO2 and NH3 in the gaseous stream, pH value, C/N ratio, volatile solids content and mesophilic and thermophilic microorganisms in the composting mass were determined periodically. During composting process in P1 and in P2 it was evolved 150 cm3 and 75 cm3 of leachate, 160 cm3 and 122 cm3 of condensate and 469 mg NH3/kgVS and 147 mg NH3/kgVS, respectively. The obtained conversion in P1 and in P2 was 57 % and 66 %, respectively.
