Sažetak
Zooplankton has important and pivotal role in foodwebs of the shallow waterbodies. However, three main groups of zooplankton, Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda, are not often equally represented and joint together within one single research. Numerous studies reflect zooplankton assemblage of temperate region, while Mediterranean temporary ponds were rare subject of scientific topic for a long time. Among them, ponds of the eastern Adriatic coast were particularly underestimated in the studies of freshwater zooplankton. The main aim of this study was to analyze zooplankton assemblage in temporary ponds with specific objectives: (i) to assess impact of abiotic and biotic factors and (ii) to compare zooplankton assemblage in Adriatic vs. inland ponds. Field study was conducted on five fishless karst ponds on Dugi otok island (middle Adriatic Sea) and five fish stocked inland ponds in NW Croatia. Results confirmed different environmental conditions in significantly alkaline Adriatic opposite to inland ponds. Rotifers were the most diverse in both groups of ponds. Significant dissimilarity (82%) in zooplankton assemblage was caused by extremely high abundance of pelagic species, i.e. Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata and Bosmina longirostris opposite to littoral species, i.e. Eucyclops serrulatus and Lecane bulla, in inland and Adriatic ponds, respectively. Results suggest that crustaceans assemblage were supported by habitat heterogeneity and biotic interactions, while rotifers assemblage was mainly enhanced by nutrients and food resources. This study represents first survey of zooplankton assemblage in eastern Adriatic region and tend to reveal food webs pattern in Mediterranean vs. inland ponds.
