Sažetak
The general public's attitude toward snakes is extremely negative, and the present fear is often exaggerated. In purpose to confirm this hypothesis, an online research among the people of the Međimurje County was conducted. The aim of the research was to determine the level and validity of the fear of snakes. Most of the respondents are afraid of the snakes, they do not recognize the basic species and they believe that the most of the people are afraid of the snakes due to a learned pattern that they are dangerous and should be feared. In this study are presented data about citizens alert about meeting with snakes in settlements of Međimurje County. In most citizens alerts there is suspect on Vipera berus (Linnaeus, 1758) which is the only potential venomous snake in the area of Međimurje County. After field work or seeing photos of recorded snake in most cases, it turns out that the found snake is non-venomous snake Coronella austriaca (Laurenti, 1768). In the study were analyzed the available information on snake bites in the area of ​​Međimurje County and cases of mortality from their bite. The data confirm unwarranted fear of snakes among the people of Međimurje County. In most cases, citizens meet with non- venomous snakes and it is necessary to educate people about the determination of species and how to behave during the meeting with snakes.
