Sažetak
Annular brooches are a relatively common find in the Middle Ages of Europe. They consist of a frame of various shapes and a movable pin with a defined base. These brooches were manufactured in a variety of forms and dimensions, as well as from different metals, both precious and base, which also affected the quality of their workmanship. They enjoyed peak popularity during the 13th and 14th centuries. They were found in hoards, settlements, fortifications and graves, and also depicted fastening upper clothing items on numerous sculptures of the period. Brooches found in graves appear also in different contexts – in the pelvic or abdominal area. In this paper, based on typology and analogies and taking into consideration different materials and individual forms, the focus is on different functions of annular brooches as part of costume. Brooches from archaeological contexts paint a much clearer picture of their various functions than their depictions on mediaeval sculptures alone. A special emphasis in the paper is placed on the apotropaic powers of annular brooches, as well as on the multiple symbolism inferable from the inscriptions on some of the brooches. As a conclusion, we can say that annular brooches reflect the rich worldview of mediaeval populations.
