Sažetak
Morphosemantic structures in the prefixal- suffixal formation of Croatian adjectives : example of the prefix preko- The paper deals with adjectives formed via a specific word formation process, i.e. the prefixal-suffixal formation. The focus of the paper is a corpus- based study of Croatian adjectives containing the prefix preko- and 15 diverse suffixes found in this type of adjectival formation. As this formation model has not previously been the object of a comprehensive analysis, this paper intends to provide insight into morphosemantic features of this adjectival group. The analysis presented here is usage-based, i.e. all the examples have been attested in the Croatian web corpus (hrWaC) and thus provide a systematic overview of adjectives that are formed via different prefixal-suffixal patterns cntaining the prefix preko-. In the hrWaC corpus, a total of 71 adjectives formed with preko- and one of the 15 suffixes (listed in the Table 1 below) appear. A vast majority of adjectives are formed with the suffix –ski, while the second most frequent suffix is –ni. This fact confirms the claim from grammar textbooks that these two suffixes are the most frequent ones found in prefixal-suffixal formation of relational adjectives (Babić 2002: 444). Out of the 15 attested suffixes, four can be grouped under – ski (-ski, -enski, -anski, -ovski), three under –čki (-čki, -ički, -ački), two under –ni (-ni, -evni), and two under –alan (-alan, -ionalan), leaving us with only 7 different suffix types entering into this kind of formation. However, grammar textbooks do not provide a systematic insight into semantic features of the adjectives formed via these diverse word formation patterns. The aim of the paper is to show that this group of relational adjectives forms a coherent morphosemantic field owing to the grammatical processes that enabled their formation, as well as closely related semantic features. Derivational and semantic relations of the analyzed adjectives are described within the model of morphosemantic patterns (MP model) as developed by Raffaelli and Kerovec (2008) and Raffaelli (2013). The MP model enables insight into grammatical and semantic processes that are operative in the formation of a certain lexical group. In the case of the explored adjectives, it is expected that they will share some of the semantic features defined for the preposition preko ‘over’, which is an equivalent of the prefix preko-. As pointed out by Tuđman Vuković (2004) (see Figure 1 below), the preposition preko is highly polysemous, and the prefix preko- is no less so. The goal of this paper is to define to what extent the meanings defined for the proposition preko and lexicographic definitions of the prefix preko- are realized in this particular morphosemantic field of relational adjectives attested in the hrWaC corpus. According to preliminary research, the dominant meaning conveyed by the preposition is the meaning ʻ(above)&across’, while in the case of the prefix it is ʻon the other side ofʼ. Even though a number of derived meanings are the same, the preposition preko can mean ‘covering’ (Preko oka je nosio povez) and ‘through someone’ (Saznao sam to preko prijatelja) or ʻthrough somethingʼ (putovati preko Splita). On the other hand, the prefix realizes two temporal meanings ‘after’ (prekopodnevna radio emisija) and ʻduringʼ (prekoljetno bildanje), as well as the meanings ʻby means ofʼ (prekomobitelni glas) and ʻtransgressing (a norm)ʼ (prekomjerno doziranje). The main aims of the paper are to explore: a) to what extent the analyzed adjectival group is similar or different in meaning with respect to the preposition preko ; b) how these meanings are grouped with respect to various prefixal- suffixal patterns (the temporal meaning ‘after’ is realized exclusively via the [preko-X- evni]Adj morphosemantic pattern, whereas we can claim that the pattern [preko-X-ski]Adj is polysemous, conveying four different meanings) ; c) how the construction in question semantically interacts with its bases ; and d) what the ratio of the defined patterns is in relation to the corpus data. Examples will be given for each of the issues addressed. We argue that implementing the MP model enables a more in-depth analysis of the relational adjectives formed through the prefixal-suffixal word formation pattern, providing a new perspective on lexical structures in morphologically rich languages.
