Sažetak
This symposium is intended to present the research project titled “Epigenetic changes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (EpiC- HNSCC)”, which is funded by the Croatian Science Foundation in the period 2014-2018. The primary objective of the project is to identify novel specific epigenetic biomarkers that will help predict early-stages of HNSCC, notably, oral and oropharyngeal cancers, patients at greater risk of developing invasive cancer, and finally, to understand treatment response in patients with HPV-associated cancers. Genome- wide technologies followed by type-specific validation assays were used to identify DNA methylation and miRNA profiles (methylome and mirome, respectively) on subsets of healthy tissue, HPV-related and HPV-unrelated precancerous oral lesions, and oral and oropharyngeal cancers. The integration of all findings should yield ideal epigenetic biomarkers, and this project should enable the improvement of existing knowledge. It should also enable the development of new technological approaches in diagnostics and prognostics along with possible new diagnostic and prognostic approaches for oral and oropharyngeal cancer.
