Sažetak
One of the main initiatives for innovating the curriculum of elementary school education in Croatia is modernizing the educational process by overcoming the limitations of traditional models of frontal teaching and enforcing various forms of open learning, which is especially important in art education. To be able to implement changes in both teaching and learning outcomes, besides the national policies and strategies, it is highly important to empower the future elementary school teachers through their formal education to introduce the changes and to perceive them as inevitable part of art and education processes. It is vital to organize the art education in teacher training universities units as experience oriented, practice based research process corresponding to contemporary art practices. The presentation shortly introduces several recent art education projects conducted at The Department of Teacher Education Studies in Gospić, University of Zadar approaching the phenomenon of visual art as a complex, multisensory experience and means of social communication.
