Sažetak
Oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) has been postulated to play an important role in atherogenesis. From the in vitro studies the transition-metal ions in conjunction with preformed lipid peroxides seem to be crucial for the initiation of lipoprotein oxidation. Our experiments show that the LDL oxidation takes place also under highly unfavorable conditions for oxidation: LDL solution in the deionized water, with chelates present, in a closed system with limited access of oxygen. The dissolved oxygen is used up within hours without simultaneous loss of the lipid-soluble antioxidants, or production of the thiobarbituric-acid-reactive substances (TBARS). After depletion of oxygen, free radicals assocoated with the lipid domain are formed. These findings suggest an alternative mechanism of the LDL oxidation. LDL oxidized in this way may be termed to be mildly oxidized.
