Sažetak
It has been confirmed that aristolochic acid ingested via bread consumption is the causative agent for endemic (Balkan) nephropathy in Bosnia and Herzegovinia, Croatia, Romania and Serbia. Observed differences in incidence, prevalence and clinical course very probably reflect differences in exposure to aristolochic acid due to difference in abundance of the plant, agricultural practices (harvesting and millimng), and difference in the presence of other risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and upper urothelial cancers (UUC). Patients from the Bosnian and Croatian endemic villages located in the river Sava valley have been treated in General Hospital Slavonski Brod for many decades. The aim of this work was to analyze whether farmers from Croatian and Bosnia EN and non-EN villages differ in clinical course and UUC characteristics.
