Sažetak
In order to ensure the best possible translation of the CORE-OM, in both the cultural and linguistic sense, it is necessary to follow a very specific and strict procedure. In our first encounter with the CORE-OM, we applied a standard procedure of translation followed by back-translation, which resulted in an initial, unauthorised translation. A year later, in 2009, an official Croatian translation of the CORE-OM was created. The aim of this presentation is to address issues of instrument translation more carefully. We will present findings comparing CORE-OM results obtained using official and unofficial translations of the Croatian CORE-OM. In our study, two large, non-clinical, community convenience samples were used. N=247 participants completed the unofficial version of the CORE-OM, while a further N=409 participants completed the official version. All data were collected using a snowball method. Item analysis indicated that differences exist between versions in the translation of 19 items, some of which were completely different. These differences were not purely grammatical, but were also qualitative differences in the intensity of the words used and in the actual terms themselves. The results demonstrate that there were statistically significant differences between groups on two dimensions of the CORE-OM: subjective well-being and problems. At the individual item level, there were statistically significant differences on 26 items. In this presentation, the question regarding the meaning of these obtained differences will be addressed - is this a reflection of two different samples or two different translations?
