Sažetak
During the 1990s Croatian language experts as well as laymen, motivated by intralinguistic and extralinguistic factors, strived to find Croatian equivalents for a great number of anglicisms entering the Croatian lexicon. The co-existence of foreign words and their adaptations in Croatian on one hand and neologisms and calques on the other indicated the complex situation which the Croatian standard language had to confront. New cultural, economic and political circumstances in the 21st century resulted in the acceptance of new anglicisms into the Croatian standard language. In the paper the linguistic developments related to attitudes towards anglicisms during these two historical periods, namely the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21s century, are compared. Special attention is paid to the manners of adaptation of anglicisms to the principles of the Croatian language system as well as to the "entrenchment" of their Croatian equivalents.
