Sažetak
Maritime communications have evolved fast in the last several decades. Voice communication has significantly improved in quality with the introduction of SSB, FM and satellite technology. However, for more reaching effects are seen in the development of written (telex and fax), and more recently in data communications, paving the way to use of electronic mail(e-mail) on ships. Varied e-mail systems developed under different standards are now inter-connectable using X.400 protocol, also enabling two-way connectivity to terrestrial telex and radio-telex network, as well as delivery of mail messages to fax and telex recipients. The financial advantages to shipowners and ship operators are seen in the use of dial-up services, public message switching facilities, and more economical public and private terrestrial network specalising in maritime communications. The biggest savings, however are made possible by switching from Inmarsat-A telex and fax communication to e-mail, cutting down ship communication expenses several fold. This papaer discuses functional and financial aspects of the use of e-mail in shipping and gives practical examples of e-mail applications.
