Sažetak
The central issue we deal with in the paper is relation of peace treaties reached after the First World War towards the issue of determination and acquisition of citizenship in the First Yugoslav state. The treaty reached between Austria and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1919, as well as the treaty reached between Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1920, contained rules for definition of citizenship in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The rules were not quite clear and they allowed certain interpretations in practice. This was especially evident in the case of persons who changed their local citizenship status after January 1 of 1910. In such cases the peace treaties allowed to authorities of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes to question citizenship. In principle, this meant that these persons should apply for citizenship of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the state authorities had to decide whether to give them citizenship or not. In practice there are various cases which allow us to search for pattern used in admission to citizenship. Here, especially relevant was the issue of loyalty or disloyalty of these applicants. In the paper we analyze particular cases and debate loyalty as a criteria for admission to citizenship.
